Joan's Piano Service - Piano Estimates and Appraisals - 516-223-4676 - $75 (Suffolk and Nassau)
I'll examine the...
Bridges - These are the pieces of wood upon which the strings rest. Small cracks are usually not a problem but wide cracks will make a clanking sound when the note is played.
Soundboard - Soundboard cracks can be of the hairline variety (thin and pretty benign) or wide enough to see through (possibly causing big problems down the road). Would you know the difference?
Pinblock - This is the heart of the piano. If the pins are loose, the strings will not hold a tune and therefore, the piano will not be playable. Steps can be taken to improve the tension but it may be costly and may not entirely solve the problem.
Action - The action is the playing mechanism containing the hammers that strike the strings and all the other 9,000 or so parts. A couple of sticky keys may not mean large problems but if the wood is dry and the glue joints cracking, you may have a headache on your hands (and it won't just be from hearing your kids play the same song over and over).
I charge $75 for an appraisal in most parts of Long Island, $85 in Queens. Piano tuning costs $99.42 + tax per tuning.
