From late 1880s to early 1900s Normal school desk
Beautiful design and workmanship
Solid Oak and Cast Iron with beautiful, ornate Scroll-work at the sides of this desk.
Very sturdy, very unique* (SEE BELOW)
It is in good condition especially considering it's age.
ORIGINAL PATINA--In original, non refinished condition. This would refinish nicely, but I kept it in it's original condition intentionally (many collectors prefer it this way).
Wooden seat supported by flowing and graceful cast iron legs. Additional supports that hold writing surface as well as storage shelf
It measures 20" W x 19.5 D when closed and 32" D fully opened x 28" H.
Seat folds up and desk portion folds down to save space when needed.
Cut out area to hold Inkwell (on LEFT side--VERY RARE TO FIND), pencil groove and cubby space could fit books.
This is very sturdy and is multipurpose. Can function as desk, end table, side table, plant or telephone table, nightstand or simply as a decorative accent/display/ conversation piece (teddy bears or dolls would love to be displayed on it).
A great Americana collectible.
I've owned this desk for approximately 45 years and have used it in different ways throughout the years. Time for a new home.
***WHAT MAKES THIS DESK UNIQUE?***
1. The INKWELL is located on the left side! Every other desk like this has inkwell on the right side. I have never seen one with inkwell on the left side. My assumption is that the inkwell is on the left side for left-handed person.
Inkwells were used with the dip pen which needed to be dipped in ink after writing a few lines. Dip pens continued in use into the 50's.
2. This desk has notches to adjust height although I have never tried to adjust it.
3. The Normal School (written on side which isn't showing up in photos) was used to train High School graduates to become teachers.
4. Also written (which probably won't show up in photos) is L and R to show which is the left and right side of desk.
Comes from a clean, smoke free, pet free home.
