Accutron Spaceview Tuning Fork Clock... stunning 1960's centre piece developed during the space race.
Near mint condition
This is a clock run by battery, and driven by vibration... yes, this clock has a tuning fork at its heart, and it humms.
The Accutron technology was developed in the early 60s, and heavily utilised during the space race. You will find tuning fork Accutron clocks in NASA built Gemini and Apollo rockets, and one even remains on the surface of the moon. It doesn't look as nice as this one, though.
Back in the day, these clocks were exceptionally expensive. Enough to make a Rolex collector wince. But the technology was so revolutionary, people really wanted a slice of the future... however much it cost. 10 years later, quartz technology was released, and like half of the watch industry, Accutron collapsed due to how cheap quartz clocks could be made... nobody wanted to spend three months salary when they could get something just as accurate for less than a days salary.
Now, of course, people understand and appreciate the Accutron design, and seek out these humming clocks.
There were many designs, from small to big. And from normal dial pieces, to exposed Spaceview clocks. As always the bigger is the better, and the most desirable is the Spaceview style. And this piece is one of Accutron's biggest, and a Spaceview design. It gets no better.
It's a centre piece that always gets people talking.
