Resting on a wood stand, is a large porcelain fishbowl planter with a beautiful rich cobalt blue applied to a white glaze. Both bowl and stand are from the 1940s and purchased by my Grandmother.
Approximate measurements are 12 1/4” diameter x 11” tall (planter only) x 16” wide x 14 1/4” tall (stand only.) With the bowl on the stand, measures approximately 22 1/2” tall.
Made from fine quality porcelain. The fishbowl, which is slightly ribbed, is unsigned and has Asian outdoor scenes on all sides. It is a classic example of chinoiserie, a European interpretation of Chinese and East Asian artistic styles. No drainage hole.
The wood stand is rosewood with a mahogany finish. It features scroll designs that appear to be the neck of swans. The stand has a paper label indicating Made in China.
The bowl is in very good condition. No breaks, chips, cracks or repairs. My Aunt had a smaller potted plant inside the bowl and, thereby, the interior shows signs of use (please see picture.) Due to age, the wood stand has repairs. One screw, holding a leg in place, is not original. There is a repair to one leg (please see pictures.)
This vintage planter would be a lovely addition to any room of your house or office. Could be used as a planter for plants or as a decorative object.
