This is a pair of Hakata Urasaki ceramic / mud sculptured figurines from the early 1950’s. Made in Japan. Hakata Urasaki figurines are an ancient art form created in 1601. Originally, they were made as offerings in Buddhist Temples. They are famous for their life-like features and great attention to details. These two figurines carry on with the artistry tradition with their incredible details and realistic facial expressions. Each weighs approximately 4 pounds and are made from ceramic / clay. Both have an underside blue stamp which reads “Made in Japan Trade R Mark.”
This pair includes:
1. Fisherman with net. Measures approximately 9 1/2” tall x 5 1/2” wide x 9” deep. He is seated and holds a net in his right hand. He is in excellent condition with no issues. No cracks, breaks or repairs.
2. Man carving a Buddha. Measures approximately 11” tall x 8” wide x 5” deep. This craftsman has his mallet raised in his right hand and a chisel positioned with his left hand. Has the look of concentration and pride on his face. His right forearm has a couple of breaks (please see picture) that have been repaired. His arm was designed to be easily removed. Otherwise, this figure is in very good condition.
