I have an older Grace Digital Mondo model GDI-IRC6000 Wi-Fi Internet Music Player for sale. It is in good condition and comes complete in it's original box with instruction manual, remote (that uses two "AA" batteries), AC power adapter and audio cable.
PLEASE READ: I purchased this Grace Digital Mondo for approx. $250 around 2017 and it worked beautifully. Not long after, the "Reciva" streaming service Grace Digital used shutdown rendering the Mondo obsolete, a "brick" in other words. They had an option on their website where you could get a significant discount on a newer model (Mondo+) that was on a newer streaming network but I never followed through. The only thing it's good for now is as a speaker. I am selling it "as is" for parts only or for the tinkerers out there. There are people who have overwritten the internal software to get it to work on another network with success but it is a very time-consuming, tedious process. With all that said, please read on to learn about some of the features of the Mondo and what was behind it's demise.
The Grace Digital Mondo model GDI-IRC6000 was a Wi-Fi internet music player that historically accessed over 18,000+ radio stations and other services through the now defunct "Reciva" network. Grace Digital ceased support for this model in 2020 resulting in the loss of native internet radio functionality.
Key details of the Mondo:
• Capabilities: Features a 3.5" color LCD screen, built-in 802.11n Wi-Fi, 3.5mm headphone jack, and auxiliary input/output
• Portability: Supported an optional rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery pack
For continued use, it may be possible to use it as a local media renderer or with an analog input.
The Grace Digital Mondo model GDI-IRC6000 Internet radio connected to the "Reciva" servers to access over 18,000+ internet radio stations and other supported various audio services, including Pandora, SiriusXM, iHeartRadio, Live365, and Dar.fm. It was also able to connect to local PCs, Macs, or NAS devices to play/stream saved music.
"Reciva" finally shut down in 2021 because it's 15 year old proprietary software was obsolete, incompatible with new hardware and too costly for owner Qualcomm to maintain without a subscription-based revenue model. The service, which acted as a directory for internet radios, faced declining relevance as users moved to modern, self-contained streaming systems (Google, Alexa).
The key reasons for the "Reciva" network shutdown were:
• Obsolete Technology: The software was old and there was no viable path to upgrade it to work with newer hardware
• High Maintenance Costs: Qualcomm faced significant costs maintaining the global server system with no recurring revenue from the devices, making the service financially unsustainable
• Lack of Expertise: There were no longer enough engineers who understood the intricacies of the proprietary code
• Manufacturer Shift: Manufacturers had largely transitioned to newer, more independent internet radio-tuning systems
The shutdown, which was finalized on September 13, 2021, rendered many older internet radios, including the Grace Digital Mondo model GDI-IRC6000 unable to search for new stations or connect to the internet.
